When Maya Michele Walked With God…
We endearingly call my second, Maya Papaya. My aunt calls her “Twin” because they share the same birth date. She is known to be stubborn, independent and a little bossy. She was born in 2022 on a hot July day. She made me have a c-section because she refused to come out and even when the doctor got ready to grab her, she pulled away. Yup, that’s Maya-Michele. She is a trip. So, when the unthinkable happened her whole life flashed before my eyes, her 4th birthday party, her 1st day at Pre-K, trips to Florida, her dimpled smile, holding her with her legs tightly wrapped around my waist as I carried her up the stairs that night… I would have never in a trillion years think that it would come to this, a mother’s nightmare. Starring in my own Lifetime movie without the camera and the lighting, the lights of the ambulance, the lighting in the ER and the lights in the ICU are not like the movies at all. As I stood there and faced Death in the face I knew I was not alone. I wasn’t going to let my baby go, no matter what the report.
When Heaven Met Us in the ICU
The Testimony of Maya Michele: God's Warrior
"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me." — Psalm 23:4
Some testimonies begin with a miracle.
Ours began in the middle of the night. Tuesday, August 4th, 2026, to be exact.
Dozing off, I awoke suddenly to movement no parent ever wants to feel.
When I looked over at my daughter, Maya Michele, she was shaking uncontrollably. Her tiny body convulsed as her eyes had turned completely to the left. Fluid ran from her mouth, and in that instant every mother's worst fear became my reality.
I screamed for my husband.
"Call 911!"
My voice barely worked. We tried to explain to the emergency operator what was happening, but the words wouldn't come. Fear has a way of stealing language.
Fifteen minutes later, the paramedics rushed through our front door.
By then...
Maya had gone limp.
As I hurried to throw on clothes, one of the paramedics gently carried my baby downstairs while another shined a flashlight into her eyes.
"Follow us."
Those words echoed in my mind as I drove behind the ambulance.
Inside, they checked her breathing over and over again. They called her name.
She never responded.
Minutes stretched into what felt like hours.
Then came the decision that changed everything.
They needed to airlift my daughter to Children's Hospital.
The helicopter landed in an empty parking lot at Kohl's, where firefighters and another EMS crew waited.
I called my father.
"Dad...pray."
I asked him to call my mother.
No mother imagines watching her child fly away without her.
As the helicopter lifted into the sky, dust swirled around me and pressed against my back.
I watched my baby disappear into the night. I drove alone on the dark highway to Children’s.
At that moment I had no choice but to place her into the hands of my Heavenly Father.
I left her breathing on her own
God was in that car with me.
The Room Every Parent Dreads
Forty-five minutes later I rushed into Children's Hospital.
The staff quietly asked me to follow them.
Instead of taking me to Maya...
...they placed me in a small room.
The walls suddenly felt like they were closing in.
I've never struggled with claustrophobia before, but I couldn't stay inside.
I opened the door.
Standing there was a chaplain.
She was kind.
Gentle.
Compassionate.
But the look on her face made my heart sink even further.
"Where is my baby?"
Instead of answering immediately, they asked me to explain everything that had happened.
Every second felt unbearable.
Then someone finally came for me.
I walked into the trauma room...
...and there she was.
My precious little girl lay surrounded by machines.
A breathing tube.
A neck brace.
IV lines.
Monitors.
Medical wrappers scattered across the floor.
Her clothes had been cut away.
She was completely unresponsive.
Then the doctor told me something I'll never forget.
She had stopped breathing in the helicopter.
My knees gave way.
I collapsed onto the floor.
And I cried out to God.
Not politely.
Not quietly.
Like the widow who lost her son.
Like Jairus.
Like every desperate parent who has ever pleaded for the life of their child.
I pleaded the blood of Jesus over Maya.
I asked God to return her strength.
To restore her breath.
To revive what only He could revive.
In that moment I wasn't relying on my own faith.
I was leaning completely on His faithfulness.
Heaven Was in That ICU
As doctors prepared to move Maya into the ICU, they continued asking questions.
Again.
And again.
And again.
I answered everyone while quietly praying in the Spirit.
Somewhere between exhaustion and surrender, I remembered something that changed everything.
God had already gone before us.
He was preparing the doctors.
Preparing the nurses.
Preparing every decision.
Preparing Maya.
The ICU team was remarkable.
Gentle.
Patient.
Compassionate.
One doctor looked at me and said something that instantly brought relief.
"She's breathing. We just want to give her extra support."
My baby was breathing.
I could finally breathe too.
The Miracle We Were Praying For
The next two days felt like a lifetime.
CT scans.
MRI scans.
Blood work.
EEGs.
Countless examinations.
Then came the news.
Her brain activity was healthy.
Doctors found a very small area that had triggered the seizure, but otherwise everything looked remarkably good.
One day later...
The breathing tube came out.
In true Maya fashion, she tried pulling at it every chance she got.
That little determination made me smile through tears.
It reminded me who she was.
A fighter.
A warrior.
God's daughter.
An Overcomer
The next day she received her discharge papers.
She walked out of that hospital breathing completely on her own.
No breathing tube.
No machines.
Only God's sustaining grace.
People often ask where God is during suffering.
I can tell you exactly where He was.
He was in the ambulance.
He was in the helicopter.
He was on the lonely highway.
He was in the emergency room.
He was in the ICU.
He was in every doctor's hands.
He was in every nurse's compassion.
He was in every prayer whispered by family and friends.
Before my family could even arrive, I was already surrounded.
Not only by incredible physicians and nurses...
...but by what I believe was a legion of angels on assignment.
Because our Father never abandons His children.
He never leaves us alone.
He never leaves us in fear.
Psalm 23 became more than words to me.
"The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me."
I walked through that valley.
But I never walked through it alone.
Maya turned four this summer…

Please know this:
God still performs miracles.
Trust Him with the little things.
Trust Him with the impossible things.
Trust Him when the answers haven't come yet.
He is still the God who heals.
He is still the God who restores.
He is still the God who breathes life where fear says there is none.
To God alone be all the glory.
"I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord." — Psalm 118:17
